n today’s fast-paced world, women are constantly navigating environments that challenge their boundaries and femininity. Whether it’s in the workplace, where professional dynamics sometimes become uncomfortable, or in the dating scene, where traditional roles are blurred, learning to navigate these spaces with confidence and grace is key. In this episode of the Femisticated Podcast, we welcome our fabulous guest, Andreea Stefanescu, founder of the School of Manners, who shared valuable insights on maintaining femininity, establishing boundaries, and finding your flow in these scenarios.
Mastering the Workplace: Setting Boundaries with Grace
The workplace can sometimes feel like a battleground, with interactions that range from simple misunderstandings to situations where you feel overpowered. One challenge many women face is responding to compliments that feel inappropriate or uncomfortable. Andrea offers a simple yet powerful solution: the “positive-negation-positive” technique. Here’s how it works:
1. Acknowledge the Positive: Start by recognizing the intention behind the compliment, even if it’s uncomfortable. This doesn’t mean accepting the behavior, but rather showing emotional intelligence. For example, you could say, “Thank you for the compliment; I appreciate your kind words.”
2. Set Boundaries Assertively: Then, without aggression, set your boundary. “However, I’d prefer if we keep our conversations focused on work during meetings.” This keeps the interaction professional and respectful.
3. End on a Positive Note: Finish by reinforcing the value of the working relationship. “I look forward to continuing our collaboration on this project.”
This framework allows you to protect your boundaries without damaging professional relationships, making it a must-learn skill for every woman in the workforce.
Handling Workplace Interruptions with Confidence
Being interrupted in meetings is another all-too-common experience. Rather than shrinking back or rushing through your points, Andrea recommends standing your ground with subtle, yet firm, actions:
• Slow Down: When interrupted, slow your speech rather than speeding up. It draws attention and commands the room.
• Use Non-Verbal Cues: Raise your hand discreetly or gesture towards your notes to visually reassert your place in the conversation. This technique grabs attention without confrontation, signaling that you’re still in control.
Feminism in the Workplace: It’s About Balance
Andrea also touched on the complexities of modern feminism in professional settings. Feminism doesn’t mean you have to assert dominance in every situation. Rather, it’s about balance and adapting your approach to the context. “Feminism is not a one-size-fits-all,” she says, encouraging women to trust their intuition and adapt to each situation with emotional intelligence and grace.
Navigating the Dating World: Who Pays?
Dating in today’s world is another arena where traditional roles are often unclear. Should women offer to pay? Should men insist? Andrea’s take is refreshingly straightforward: The person who invites, pays. If you’ve been invited on a date, it’s reasonable to expect that the person who extended the invitation covers the cost. However, in relationships, communication is key. If you prefer to split the bill or take turns paying, make that clear upfront.
But more importantly, it’s about knowing what you want and aligning with someone who shares your values. If you’re looking for a partner who takes on a provider role, own that desire. As Andrea notes, “There’s someone for everyone.” Whether you prefer traditional roles or a more equal partnership, what matters is that you find the right match for you.
The Golden Rule: Clear Communication
Ultimately, both in the workplace and in dating, the key is clear and confident communication. Know what you want, set your boundaries, and find ways to express your needs in a way that maintains respect for yourself and others. Whether it’s asserting your place in a meeting or discussing who pays for dinner, confidence and clarity will guide you to success.
